A Few Interesting Facts about Haiti~
1. 2,500,000 Haitians live in extreme poverty. Haiti is the poorest country in the northern hemisphere.
2. Two Haitians out of three live with less than $2 per day.
3. 10% of the richest Haitians possess 70% of the country's total income.
4. 50% of urban Haitians are unemployed.
5. Although agriculture is an important sector of Haiti’s economy, the country fails to produce enough food and imports more than 50% for its population’s needs. It imports 80% of its main staple: rice.
6. 90% of farmers depend on rain for their harvest as only 10% of the crops are irrigated.
7. 100,000 children under five suffer from acute malnutrition while one child out of three is stunted, or irreversibly short for their age.
8. Less than 50% of households have access to safe water and only 25% benefit from adequate sanitation.
9. One third of Haitian children and women are anemic.
